“Bother me tomorrow, today I’ll buy no sorrows…”
Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”
The Sabbath (or Shabbat, if you go the Hebrew route) is a day of rest. I try to take that very seriously, as the commandment is “do no regular work.” There’s some exceptions, that aren’t specifically stated in the Bible, but, there are example, and I follow that. If there’s an emergency, I work. If if helps the greater good, I’ll do it on a Shabbat. If it serves the community, I have no issue with doing it.
That last part is why for about two years I helped set up for Torah Study on Saturday mornings, which means I was doing work. Sure, I wasn’t doing my regular work, but it was work none the least. Kat and I would be up at 8 AM, get to Synagogue at 9 AM, and be there until 1:30 PM. From 9 AM to 10 AM was setup, and from 12:30 to 1:30 was clean up.
And, I never minded, really. I felt it was a good and right thing to do, and I enjoyed the process.
Now, having given that up, I’m prepping for First Geek Congregation. At the moment that means from here on out I’ll be helping out with getting The Center of Wichita’s location ready (which is cool – while it helps First Geek Congregation since it’s going to be our space, but it’s also nice to help out a community that needs a hand, and a community that will hopefully do good in the area.) After that’s ready, Saturday will become my “study day” for the introduction portion of Sunday service, and boning up on whatever topic the guest speaker will be discussing on Sunday.
But, even with the “work” I am doing, I do have certain rules I try and follow. For instance, until I quit smoking entirely, I don’t stress about it on Saturday. If it’s a day of rest, then, I try and find rest in the other things in life. I try not to stress about what I eat, or worry if I miss a workout.
I guess, for me, all the daily life stresses are part of that “regular work” that the world deals with, and taking a day off from that – the best that I can, anyway – is a great way of honoring the Sabbath. And, ya know, that would be a great thing if everyone could just take a day off from their normal stresses every week. 🙂
